A community of dreamers and doers

Modifyre is a Burning Man regional event held in Queensland, Australia. It is a not-for-profit event run entirely by volunteers with the shared goal of creating a year-round community dedicated to participatory arts, self-expression, de-commodification, and self-reliance.

We are radically inclusive and encourage anyone and everyone to participate in our community. To learn more, take a look through the following pages - WHO we are, WHAT we do, WHEN we do it, and WHERE to find us. The HOW and the WHY are up to you...

Modifyre is run by BURN Arts, Inc - the Brisbane Urban and Regional Network for the Arts - an independent arts organisation for the promotion and development of participatory arts and culture in Brisbane and surrounding regions.

A metropolis built on self-reliance and self-expression

Participation is key at Modifyre. It is the focus around which all functions in our community revolve. We value process over product, and believe that creation for its own sake can provide a powerful means of fostering healthy minds and healthy communities.

We believe that everyone has the potential to create art. Indeed, Modifyre itself may be understood as a large-scale immersive artwork manifested through the collective imagination of its citizens. Every unplanned interaction, every theatrical display, every spontaneous act of gifting, forms a part of this artwork and sets the stage upon which the next part might be performed. It is an expression of our shared desire to indulge the creative and collaborative impulses that define us as humans.

But you don't have to be an "Artist" to participate at Modifyre. There are loads of ways to share your talents. If you're in need of a little inspiration, check out the pages below. Otherwise, let us know what you're planning & jump straight to Registration.

Our Philosophy

Modifyre's ethos is built on a series of ten key concepts which act as guidelines for the worldwide Burning Man Regional Network. As such, the event may be understood as a celebration of a way of life lived consistently with these principles.

The ten principles are intended not as a dictate of how people should be and act, but as a reflection of the community’s ethos and culture as it has organically developed since Burning Man's inception.

Anyone may be a part of Modifyre. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.

Modifyre is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.

In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.

Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.

We value civil society. Community members who organise events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavour to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and federal laws.

Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.

Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources.

Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.

Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.

Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.
